About the Map of Californianess

For the six piece in the Mapmakers Multiverse art installation, the regional cultural theme continued with a focus back on Americana; showcasing the unique energetic spectrum of life observed on the west coast.

By 2018, with the established coherence of first five pieces, the creative process for producing contextual narratives had become rapid, but nearly 1500 calibrations and 18,000 panel changes were still required to set the entire collection in alignment.

While the Map of Cheekyness was prepared for both American and British audiences, intention was held for the iconic elements of California to be recognizable amongst global audiences, while still being culturally acceptable and meaningful amongst the state’s residents.

Timely elements such as the impact of the Me Too movement and the opioid crisis influenced the narratives, and due to constant panel changes throughout the entire collection, it become very clear the Multiverse would likely remain a living evolving ever-changing installation as each new piece was introduced.
